I knew Johnny-Sue as 1 of the 2 brilliantly hilarious back-up singers and the drummer for DADDY, one of the most outrageous and unique bands allowed to exist for a long period of time in 20th-21st century America ( DaddyUSA.bandcamp.com ). They only got away with their subject matters because anyone can tell just by the sound of their voices that they really are speaking from a first-person perspective, really are of this poor white-trash culture and really are describing these experiences as charmingly as they can. I also knew her as one of our top 3 supporters, without ever sending over any of her own beyond-excellent demos, and the sweet little lady who would always come to our Cincinatti shows with some delicious and spiked baked good. Over the years we became closer and closer as her cancer got worse and worse. I always wanted to do something to help but she would just say she's getting everything she needs. In the end though, the over-filled hospitals were pushing her check-ups back further and further. I never thought this pandemic would tear through my list of favorite underground legends like it did but, Johnny-Sue was the 2nd of 6 of my favorite ones it's taken so far. Like the rest of my favorite womxn singers, she didn't like to hear her voice on recordings, and always did her best to take up as little space as possible, but it's situations like these that make me ever-so-grateful to have her voice and noisey-angel voice on tape.
